Skin cancer Myths

May 2, 2018 at 5:25 pm

A recent article has highlighted 15 skin cancer myths.

It is worth mentioning a couple of these myths.  One is that people who tan easily are safe from skin cancer.  This is not true and people who tam easily still need to protect themselves and are at risk of melanoma.

Another is that clothing gives complete protection.  It’s very important to realise that the material of the clothing can let UV light through and may not give much protection.  You therefore must apply sunscreen to your skin as well as wearing clothing unless you are wearing tightly woven fabric that is designed for sun protection

I had just been told after attending the Mole Clinic at my local pharmacy that I could potentially have a melanoma on my right leg. Obviously I was very worried and upset by this and when I met Dr. Herd he did his best to try and reassure me. The mole was removed and after a few anxious weeks my results came back fine. I have since seen Dr. Herd on a regular basis over the years for annual skin check ups and I find that his calming and friendly manner gives me peace of mind.
