Dr Robert M Herd trained at Edinburgh Medical School. His general medical training was at Edinburgh University before entering Dermatology training as a registrar and senior registrar at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. During this time he undertook a large study of atopic dermatitis for which was awarded an MD. He took a year’s sabbatical attached to Harvard Medical School in Boston learning laser therapy and Mohs’ Micrographic Surgery.
He was appointed Consultant Dermatologist at the Western Infirmary in Glasgow in 1999 with a remit of developing skin cancer services. In the following years he set up Scotland’s first Mohs’ Surgery service, established the managed clinical network for skin cancer, started the first regional MDT for skin cancer and led change in the way skin cancer services were delivered in the West of Scotland.
The Mohs’ Service has expanded since it was started in 2001 and around 1800 patients have been treated. The service at Ross Hall Hospital was established in 2008 and has provided the opportunity for insured and uninsured patients to be treated in a private setting.
Recently he has supervised two PhD projects related to skin cancer and been involved in clinical trials of the new hedgehog pathway inhibitor drugs for treating advanced basal cell carcinoma. He was the only person in Scotland involved in these trials.
Recent publications have focused on Mohs surgery, melanoma, skin cancer in renal transplant patients and hedgehog pathway inhibitors.

I had just been told after attending the Mole Clinic at my local pharmacy that I could potentially have a melanoma on my right leg. Obviously I was very worried and upset by this and when I met Dr. Herd he did his best to try and reassure me. The mole was removed and after a few anxious weeks my results came back fine. I have since seen Dr. Herd on a regular basis over the years for annual skin check ups and I find that his calming and friendly manner gives me peace of mind.
